Dutch
"Sometimes earning your place in a family means going the distance."
It can be hard to find a good Thanksgiving movie between Halloween and Christmas, but Dutch delivers a fun, funny journey with real heart at its center.
Dutch Dooley isn't Doyle's real father. He's dating Doyle's mother, and when Thanksgiving approaches, he volunteers to drive across the country to pick up her spoiled, entitled son from boarding school and bring him home for the holiday. What should be a simple road trip becomes an odyssey of conflict, as Doyle—a snobbish rich kid who resents Dutch from the start—does everything possible to make the journey miserable.
The comedy comes from the clash between Dutch's working-class sensibility and Doyle's prep school pretension. They bicker, scheme, and sabotage each other at every turn. But underneath the humor is something more significant: Dutch's absolute commitment to getting this kid home to his mother.
Dutch doesn't have to do this. He could give up at any point. Doyle certainly gives him every reason to. But Dutch persists—not because it's easy or pleasant, but because bringing Doyle home matters to the woman he loves. His efforts aren't about winning Doyle over or proving himself. They're about showing up and doing what needs to be done, even when it's thankless work.
The goodness in Dutch is found in the portrayal of commitment and love in a relationship. Even though Dutch isn't Doyle's real father, it's his efforts to bring Doyle home to his mother for Thanksgiving that prove Dutch's love for her. And through that journey—through all the arguments and mishaps and frustrations—Doyle begins to see Dutch differently. What looked like stubbornness reveals itself as dedication. What seemed like interference becomes care.
By the end, Dutch has earned something far more valuable than Doyle's approval: he's earned his place in this family. And Doyle has learned what a father figure actually looks like—not someone who shares your blood, but someone who shows up when it matters and refuses to give up on you.
For a fun Thanksgiving watch with genuine heart, Dutch delivers both laughs and a reminder that love is demonstrated through commitment, especially when that commitment is tested.
